Faith is usually used when referring to God, yet Psalm 27 which is recited during the High Holiday period, is usually translated as “trust in the Lord”. Trust is usually used when referring to people (i.e. I trust my car mechanic) but faithfulness is considered an important part of any intimate relationship. We recently read from the Parsha, Emor. It contains many laws about the priests of our community, the Kohanim. To this day, we have identified those among us who carry this special designation. However, our entire people Israel have been exhorted by God to be a “nation of priests and a holy congregation.” We look to our priests for insight as to how to achieve this goal. Our midrashim teach us that there are five attributes a Kohane Gadol must have. They are:
1) Wisdom. The High Priest would perform the avoda service as the representative of all. The quality that mattered above all for this task was greatness in Torah. (Click to read the full article in Kol Bet Am)
